Napoleon ‘Nap’ Ulibarri
“Nappy” as we all knew him. Shown here standing in front of the new home on the Boulevard- it was a very good year for the lilacs and lawns. There was also a big flood the year the family moved in to the new home. Our father, Mitzie, most likely took this photo the summer of 1947.
Nappy and Mitzie built their darkroom in the spacious basement of the new home; they made the walls out of adobe and, together with the stone foundation, created a perfect vault for their work.
I often refer to the many negatives, slides and film as the “vault”. We will continue to open the vault to share some of the wonderful images of the past– delightfully within the reach of our memories and beyond.

This is a very early image taken by Nappy. He worked at the mines in Terrero and this photograph looks like the high country above Pecos. He told us that he lived for a week at the mines on a quart of jelly and boxes of crackers; I’m sure he could hardly wait for that homemade bread, beans and chile at home. Hopefully someone will recognize the area or the school district indicated on the bus–we love stories and welcome your input.
